Vecchio Frantoio Bartolomei Montecchio
In Montecchio (Tr), a small stone village nestled in a stunning olive-grove landscape, just 20 km from Orvieto, the Bartolomei family has been producing extra virgin olive oil for four generations since 1890. The work of the Bartolomei siblings—Carla, Rita, Pierluigi, and Chiara—starts in the olive groves, continues in the mill with the pressing, and ends in the welcoming tasting rooms for tastings and learning about extra virgin olive oil or in the Olive Oil Museum, located in the rooms adjacent to the mill. This journey is a testament to love, perseverance, knowledge, and vision.
The hills of Montecchio are an ideal home for olive trees, both due to the perfect soil characteristics and their favorable southern exposure. The most common and typical cultivars in the area are Moraiolo, Frantoio, and Leccino, the same varieties used by Frantoio Bartolomei for the Diamante blend – DOP Umbria Colli Orvietani. Since 2012, the company has planted new varieties and trees of Moraiolo, Nocellara del Belice, and Leccio del Corno, used to produce the single-variety Moraiolo, Nocellara del Belice, and Leccio del Corno extra virgin olive oil. The oils are extracted by a state-of-the-art plant, “Molinova Serie Oro,” which expertly combines craftsmanship and innovation.
Olive oil tourism is a must at Frantoio Bartolomei. A complete Oil Experience, from field to table, from past to present, has been available for some time now. It begins at the Oil Museum, with three impressive exhibition rooms that immerse you in the past. This unique and magical place allows you to experience and touch the history of olive oil production. The tour then continues to the actual mill, which is also visible during peak production.
The experience wouldn’t be complete without a tasting in the panoramic room overlooking the adjacent olive grove; a space designed to share, savor, and discover all the flavors and innate secrets of the five extra virgin olive oils, and more… menus designed to complement the various productions, featuring local products and specialties. A cameo of the Bartolomei olive oil mill is also present in Orvieto: a restaurant and olive oil shop where you can enjoy traditional dishes paired with the company’s extra virgin olive oils, in a setting whose atmosphere recalls that of the mill, yet right in the heart of the historic center.
