Stroncone, a village nestled in nature overlooking the Terni Valley
The medieval village of Stroncone “stands astride the hill” of Trioni, at 450 meters above sea level, and its position seems to dominate the entire Terni valley.
The town belongs to the medieval fortification system: castles used by the dominant city for defensive purposes. From the top of its hill, the small town surveys the agricultural landscape below, seemingly challenging the neighboring castles.
Numerous artistic treasures can be observed, both inside and outside the city walls: the sixteenth-century Fountain of the Three Cups; the Church of San Giovanni Decollato, a small jewel of Baroque art; small squares, narrow and characteristic streets, churches, and unexpected views—this is Stroncone.
In the surrounding area, abbeys also constitute a dominant presence. These are a sort of abbey-fortress, fully integrated into the rural landscape, as they once controlled large landed estates. Two Benedictine monasteries, dependent on the Imperial Abbey of Farfa in the Middle Ages, are present in this area: San Benedetto in Fundis, which predates the Stroncone Castle, the ruins of which are now abandoned, and San Simeone, which houses the religious community of the reconstructors.
Abbeys, monasteries, and convents, and a constellation of splendid hamlets, once castles, make up the territory of the Municipality of Stroncone, crossed by the Protomartyrs’ Way and a stretch of the Franciscan Way.
From the center of the village, the mountainous area of I Prati and Le Cimitelle can be reached in just a few minutes. Those who come to these places retrace the paths of transhumance, war, banditry, faith, and nature.
The municipality, up to 550 meters above sea level, is home to a network of 1,000 hectares of land. It is characterized by a hilly strip of olive groves, interspersed with Aleppo pine and holm oak forests up to 800 meters above sea level. The mountainous area is characterized by a significant presence of chestnut trees. The chestnut groves extend over 140 hectares, some centuries-old trees displaying all their majesty, almost demanding respect for their history. From 900 meters above sea level, the forest changes to beech trees; these places offer ever-changing natural spectacles.
