Discovering the town of Castel Viscardo
Located a few kilometers from Orvieto, in the production area of the “Colli Orvietani” DOP extra virgin olive oil, the town takes its name from the castle built in the 13th century by Viscardo di Alberico, captain of the imperial army, around which the town center developed, still dominated by the ancient fortress. The historic center retains its medieval character, with narrow streets, stone arches, and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Castel Viscardo is also known for its artisanal tradition of handmade terracotta, a local specialty passed down from generation to generation.
Testifying to this historic tradition, a recent discovery of an Etruscan kiln was uncovered during archaeological excavations in Coriglia, a hamlet of Castel Viscardo, confirming that this area was already used for clay processing in Etruscan times.
