Pike has always been, since time remembered, a species that has lived in Lake Trasimeno, whose presence is periodically increased by restocking. This fresh water fish has an unmistakable silhouette, characteristic for its formidable teeth, situated in a strong, wide and concave throat. The eyes, not large, are located a bit higher to allow the pike to see in every direction. Young pike are more vividly coloured while during the reproduction phase they have a bronze-copper sheen.
Elongated body covered with cycloidal scales, the snout is generally prominent and flat, its wide mouth has numerous teeth. The back is a greenish-brown colour, the sides are marble, white and black striped and camouflage. The belly is white-yellow, the yellowish fins have black spots. The average length is 40-50 cm but can grow up to 120 cm long. The average weight is 600 grams but it can weigh up to 7-8 kg. The meat is fine, white, firm yet delicate.
